Montana Heritage Center: Montana, Told in One Room After Another
Helena's new Montana Heritage Center opened its doors in December 2025 after a 20-year vision and a $107 million build - 165,000 square feet housing the state historical society's museum, three galleries, archives, a cafe, and a gift shop. It tells the state's story across 15,000 years, and we spent a morning happily lost in it.
The Layout
What sets the place apart is how the story is organized: a well-layered timeline starting with Montana's Indian tribes going back centuries, running through the fur trade, the gold camps, the cattle barons, the copper kings, and up to the present day. The exhibits build on each other the way a good book does, room after room, so you come out the other side feeling like you understand the state rather than just having seen its stuff.
Pair It With the Capitol
The Heritage Center sits right by the Montana State Capitol - the state literally schedules field trips to both together, and so should you. We toured the museum in the morning and walked over to the Capitol after. One admission note: at the time of our visit the Capitol's exterior was undergoing a facelift, with scaffolding affecting both the dome photos and the light reaching the stained glass inside - a small price, and a reason to come back when the work is done.
