Matthews Recreation Area: Hooked Up by Seven
Hooked up and rolling by 7:00 AM - a personal best for this trip. From Medora we pointed the rig west, dumped tanks along the way, and covered the roughly 180 miles to Miles City, Montana, setting up at Matthews Recreation Area by 11:00 in the morning, with the temperature already pushing the upper 90s.
The Campground
Matthews Recreation Area is a Bureau of Land Management campground on the edge of Miles City, set on 249 acres of rolling prairie with sites scattered among the cottonwoods and sage. It is a workingman's campground: no frills, level gravel, easy access off the highway, and the kind of quiet you only get when the nearest neighbor is a field of dryland wheat. For an overnight staging stop between the Badlands and the Helena country, it did exactly what we needed - and the evening cooled enough by 8:30 to open the trailer and let the vent fans do their work.
The Off-Grid Lesson
The stop taught us something about our setup, too. Running the air conditioner on battery power alone, it would only run at about half strength and never really cooled the trailer in that heat - a real-world reminder that for summer stays in the high plains, hookups or generator time are not optional luxuries. Noted, logged, and planned around for every stop since.
Why Miles City
Miles City sits where the Tongue River meets the Yellowstone, a true cow town with serious history - the birthplace of the Montana Stockgrowers Association and home to the famous Bucking Horse Sale. We used it as a one-night waypoint before pushing on to Big Timber, but we gave it a full afternoon: the Range Riders Museum and the WaterWorks Art Museum, both worthy of their own stories. Sometimes the "just an overnight" stops surprise you.
